On the basis of the 4 targets of research and development shown by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure,
Transport and Tourism, BRI is focusing on the "Priority Research Themes" which are socially significant and urgent,
and putting about 75% of its research budgets intensively in research and development on those themes. BRI is
steadily conducting the "Basic Research Themes" too.
BRI is actively attempting to gain outside competitive funds, implementing joint researches with universities,
private companies, etc. in appropriate allocation of roles with them, accepting outside researchers and
conducting research evaluation by outside experts in order to carry out research and development properly
without overlaps with other research institutes. |
4 Targets of Research and Development shown by the Minister of Land, Infrastracture, Transport and Tourism
1) |
Realization of Sustainable Housing, Buildings and Urban Communities by Green Innovations |
2) |
Realization of Secure and Safe Housing, Buildings and Urban Communities |
3) |
Maintenance and Revitalization of Existing Housing, Buildings and Urban Communities Coping with the
Declining and Aging Population |
4) |
International Contributions by Building and City Planning Technology and Response to Informatization |
Examples of Specific Research Subject
Improving Fire-safety in Existing Buildings |
BRI develops comprehensive evaluation methods to
contribute to improving fire-safety in existing buildings without
satisfactory smoke-control equipment, etc.
Revitalizing and Utilizing of Existing Buildings
Conversioning to
maisonette, enlarging
openings, etc. |
BRI conducts research on institutional barriers and
technical standards in further renovation of existing buildings
including enlargements in space or vertical expansion.
Community Development Methods for Elders |
BRI creates a guideline for community development to ensure active lives of elderly people, through studies on their daily activities and methods to promote their participation in community activities.
Design Methods for Hot-humid Regions in Asia |
BRI researches to develop the design guidelines of energy efficient housing and spread the technologies suitable for hot-humid area where the population and energy consumption are increasing. |
Development of LCCM Housing |
LCCM Demonstrative House
BRI develops a design guideline of Life-Cycle Carbon
Minus housing (LCCM housing) as well as advanced
evaluation methods for energy saving performance in
buildings.
Development of Larger Wood Buildings |
BRI develops a structural design guideline of a larger
wood building for smaller builders as well as its test and
evaluation methods in order to increase the use of wood in
building field.
Measures against Huge Earthquakes for Skyscrapers |
BRI sophisticates the long-period ground motions for
structural design coping with coupled huge earthquakes
and clarifies the criteria to evaluate seismic capacity of
skyscrapers.
Development of Countermeasures to Tsunamis |
Simulation of
tsunami force on a
building |
BRI carries out research and development to improve
technical standards for safer buildings against tsunami in the
light of lessons from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
